What is an Anxiety Disorder?

It’s important to emphasize that experiencing the emotion of anxiety is not a sign of a mental illness. Anxiety is a natural instinct designed to help someone be alert to their environment. It can help someone stay alert and ready in case something goes wrong, especially if they’re in a potentially dangerous situation. It is, in essence, the person’s brain trying to keep them safe.

Every person who’s ever lived has experienced anxiety at some point (unless, of course, they have a condition affecting their emotional range). An anxiety disorder is a natural emotion acting in a dysfunctional way. The anxiety is not protecting the person, but working against them and hindering their quality of life.

Some examples of how this may manifest include:

OCD consists of an unhealthy cycle wherein a person suffers from recurring thoughts about something (obsessions) and takes actions in an attempt to placate the worry (compulsion). However, these actions may not actually have an impact and may only serve to alleviate the obsession temporarily.

Most people have fears, and most fears are rooted in something realistic. Phobias are severe and disproportionate fears that create excessive worry and affect a person’s life. The treatment is usually gradual exposure therapy to the object of fear.

This is a specific phobia of being overwhelmed and unable to escape, usually manifesting as a fear of new places. Someone with this phobia may avoid unfamiliar situations, crowds, new situations, or open spaces.

Many people become nervous in social situations. Social anxiety disorder is a disproportionate expression of those feelings, where the person feels incredible fear and anxiety in social situations. They may feel like they are consistently being watched or judged for their actions.

This anxiety disorder is somewhat related to social anxiety, in that the person is unable to or is afraid to speak during certain situations. This typically affects children, but anyone of any age can be affected.

Generalized anxiety disorder involves intense fear and anxiety related to certain activities or events. This disorder can take many forms and types, affecting individuals differently. Difficulty controlling these fears frequently leads to restlessness, fatigue, muscle tension, indigestion, insomnia, and irritability.

If feeling anxious is causing problems in your life, our anxiety counseling program at Crestview offers outpatient anxiety treatment programs designed to help clients manage the fears that are holding them back. Our program provides clients with practical tools to manage and alleviate anxiety symptoms, supporting the development of healthy coping mechanisms.

Signs of an Anxiety Disorder

People cope with anxiety in many ways. Some ways promote growth, while others keep people feeling stuck and powerless. Many people with anxiety disorders use several different coping mechanisms, some that they may not even be aware of. Similar to ADHD, this can make it difficult to obtain a diagnosis due to the amount of compensatory coping the person has done throughout their life.

Different people respond to anxiety in different ways, including physical symptoms. These may include:

  • Mood changes
  • Feelings of guilt
  • Weight gain or weight loss
  • Insomnia
  • Feeling hopeless
  • Need for control
  • Fits of acute fear or anxiety, also known as anxiety attacks

These symptoms can feel overwhelming at times, causing many people to feel that they cannot function like a “normal” person. Fortunately, with help and ongoing support, it’s possible to manage an anxiety disorder in a healthy way. Learning healthy coping mechanisms is an essential part of this.

Some individuals may turn to alcohol or other substances as a way to manage their anxiety symptoms. This can provide temporary relief, but the person will need more of the addictive substance over time to feel the same effects. If they develop an addiction due to this self-medication, this can lead to additional challenges and the need for integrated treatment approaches.

Can Anxiety Therapy Help Me?

At Crestview, our staff is committed to providing empathetic, compassionate care for people with generalized anxiety and other mental health conditions. We offer a broad range of programs for individuals suffering from anxiety and related co-occurring disorders, including:

  • Medication-assisted treatment, including prescription of medications and monitoring progress to ensure effective anxiety relief

An anxiety treatment program typically starts by determining how anxiety impacts a person’s life, identifying anxiety triggers, and exploring its root causes. In your discussions with your therapist or counselor, you will discuss the root causes of your anxiety, meditation and calming techniques, balancing thoughts and emotions, and effective communication strategies. They will understand your condition, answer any of your questions, and be able to explain to you how anxiety affects your life.

TINA

“I can’t speak highly enough about Crestview. I am helping my brother navigate his road to recovery from a horrible addiction to alcoholism. He has been in and out of various levels of treatment facilities for about five years but what makes Crestview so special is that his ‘care team’ truly cares about him and communicates with me when I have concerns or questions. It is quite rare to have the unending support of educated and compassionate people that I can talk to and troubleshoot issues with. They communicate better than any facility that my brother has been to over the last five years and they do so with incredible empathy. They have become my second family. I thank them from the bottom of my heart. I recommend Crestview Recovery for struggling addicts that want to feel that their lives truly matter because they do!”

Signs of Recovery From an Anxiety Disorder

Thankfully, there is hope for recovery from anxiety conditions. This may look like coping, ongoing therapy, or medication management. But healing from anxiety involves not only physical but also emotional recovery, as addressing emotional well-being is an essential part of overcoming these challenges.

Recovering from anxiety is a gradual process, and the signs of improvement can be subtle at first.

Here are some key indicators that you’re on the path to recovery from anxiety:

You know you are doing well in your recovery when you are more aware of your thoughts. Anxiety no longer dictates your thoughts or decisions as much as it used to.

When you are well into your addiction recovery, a good night’s sleep becomes easier to obtain. You also feel refreshed and energized when you wake up instead of groggy and drained of life.

Comments someone says about you will pass you by and not give you a second thought, because you like yourself more at your core. You know you’re on the way to recovery when you’re attending therapy sessions, taking medication consistently (when relevant), and no longer feeling ashamed of having an anxiety disorder and/or needing anxiety treatment.

Recovering from anxiety means that you allow yourself to feel genuine emotions. In the past, you may have felt numb about everything. Now, you feel better able to laugh when something is funny, feel sad in moments that call for sadness, or be genuinely happy. Empathy is important in this process, as it helps you recognize and accept your own emotions during recovery.

Recovery from an anxiety disorder means you no longer look at every personal flaw and mistake. Instead, you’re now able to accept that you are not perfect and that everyone makes mistakes. There is a deeper belief that as long as you learn from your mistakes, you will be fine as time goes on.
