Anxiety is a common mental health disorder that affects millions of men and women in Oregon and across the country. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and can significantly impact a person’s ability to function. Anxiety counseling can help people better understand the cause behind their anxiety and develop healthy ways of coping with their symptoms. By enrolling in an anxiety treatment program, patients can greatly improve their work and personal lives.
At Crestview Recovery, our team has experience treating anxiety and other types of mental health disorders through our accredited mental health treatment programs. Each patient receives individualized attention from a behavioral therapist who will work to uncover the cause behind their anxiety. They will then help them develop healthy coping skills for managing their symptoms and triggers while improving their self-esteem and communication skills. How Can Anxiety Counseling Help?
Anxiety counseling offers a safe space where patients can talk with a certified therapist about their anxiety and ease any frustrations they have about their condition. Anxiety is one of the more common types of disorders that can affect everyone, no matter their age, sex, or personal beliefs.
Symptoms of anxiety can be mild such as butterflies in the stomach or feeling nervous or apprehensive before a big presentation to a full-blown panic attack. Severe anxiety symptoms include hyperventilating, rapid heart rate, sweating, trouble concentrating, increasing fear, and an overwhelming sense of doom or despair. Anxiety can cause a major disruption in a person’s life and can lead to substance abuse if left untreated.
The types of anxiety disorders that counseling can help with include:
- Generalized anxiety disorder
- Social anxiety
- Panic disorders
- Separation anxiety
- Selective mutism
- Agoraphobia and other phobias
At Crestview Recovery, we are well aware of all of the benefits of anxiety counseling and provide Portland residents with several types of anxiety treatment programs. In cases of anxiety-induced substance abuse, we provide dual diagnosis treatment to treat both disorders simultaneously.
The Benefits of Anxiety Therapy
Those who decide to enroll in an anxiety treatment program will discover several benefits of talking with a trained therapist about their feelings. They will find that talking about the way they feel can ease stress and tension and improve their understanding of their triggers.
Additional benefits of anxiety counseling include:
Behavioral Therapy
Patients will work with a certified therapist in group and private therapy, where they will discover what is fueling their anxiety and develop healthy coping skills for managing their symptoms. In private therapy, patients will learn how to express their feelings in a healthy way while learning how to recognize their triggers. During group therapy, they will practice communicating and coping skills while gaining valuable insight from different perspectives.
Medication-Assisted Treatment
In cases of severe anxiety or substance abuse, medical staff will administer medications to ease withdrawal symptoms and cravings along with any anxiety symptoms that interfere with recovery. They will monitor patients for any adverse effects and adjust the dosages as their symptoms diminish. Most patients will be 100% drug-free by the end of the program.
Family Therapy
Anxiety affects more than just the person struggling with the disorder. It also impacts their families. To help everyone understand what anxiety is and what it does to a person, parents, spouses, and children are included in the treatment program. They are given a safe space to talk about any feelings or frustrations they have and learn how to create a supportive home environment that will benefit their recovery.
Develop a Strong Support Network
In addition to improving relationships with families, patients will develop healthy relationships with their peers. These relationships can turn into lifelong friendships that will support a healthy lifestyle.
